Summer Reading: #GIRLBOSS and The Glitter Plan

Hey everyone! With a break now from school, I decided to indulge myself in some summer reading. Since I've always been interested in the business-side of fashion, I chose to read books by some of the greatest female entrepreneurs namely, Sophia Amoruso (founder of nastygal.com) and Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor (co-founders of Juicy Couture). Check out the summaries below and let me know if your thoughts if you've read these too!

#GIRLBOSS (Amazon $19.44 CAD - Hardcover)

I chose to read Sophia Amoruso's "#GIRLBOSS" since she made fashion e-commerce history with her successful company NastyGal. NastyGal is an online store that specializes in vintage-y type clothes for everyday to formal wear. Sophia didn't have a fancy post-secondary education, nor do I remember her finishing high school either. After a couple of odd-end jobs, one of which included checking ID's at a university, she started re-selling scavenged vintage finds using eBay as her platform and MySpace to keep in touch with her customers. She ran it as a home-based business at first using just a steamer and handling all the shipping herself. Eventually she purchased a warehouse and transitioned NastyGal to its own website to meet demand, but it only skyrocketed from there. After moving to an even larger warehouse, she started signing deals with other designers at fashion trade shows to keep up the variety NastyGal has to offer.

The Glitter Plan (Amazon $20.06 CAD - Hardcover)

I also decided to read Pam and Gela's "The Glitter Plan"as I was always interested in what inspired Juicy Couture's signature top-to-toe velour look. The iconic duo met while working retail in a small boutique and it was an instant connection. They began by making stylish maternity wear, seeing the gap in the market and were successful in selling re-fashioned Levi's with an extra roomy elastic around the waist. After that venture, they decided to start a line of clothing they would wear and love. It began with a trip to Japanese fashion hub, Harajuku that inspired their collection of fitted t-shirts which were accepted by a handful of retailers. But as Juicy began to pick up speed, Pam and Gela came up with the  idea for stylish lounge-appropriate tracksuits and started designing them first out of bright-colored terry cloth, then out of rich-hued velour.  Juicy's sales grew so fast that they attracted attention of larger companies that were interested in buying their company. In 2003, Juicy Couture was bought by Liz Claiborne (now known as Fifth and Pacific Companies) for $53.1 million dollars. With the direction and experience of the Claiborne personnel, Juicy Couture expanded its product line and had unhindered sales growth for a couple of years. Pam and Gela remained as the creative co-directors till 2010 when they were replaced and subsequently left their company. In December 2013, the company was sold to Authentic Brands for $195 million dollars and the duo went off to launch another line called Pam & Gela.

I made two trips to my local Chapters and literally parked myself in a chair and read them each in one go while sipping on my fave cookie crumble Starbucks frappuccinos.

Spring Staple Items

Hey everyone! I've been really busy lately but I'm so glad I can finally get back to one of the activities I enjoy the most - blogging! So without further ado, I'd like to share with you some of the staple items I've seen online, in malls that I may or may not already own.

1) Drawstring Track Pant - $59.90 CAD (Express)

I bought a pair of these during one of Express' 40 % off everything sales so it was around $35 CAD total. I wish I had known this earlier, but if you present a student and SPC card at the time of purchase, you can get an additional 10 % off the deal any deal offered. I'm always watching the deals at Express so follow me on Twitter and I'll let you know when a good sale comes up!

Anyways, I've practically been living in these for the past couple of weeks as they're so easy to match with practically anything. They can be dressed up with a plain tee and statement necklace for a more stylish occasion or just worn casually with a knit sweater. This is definitely something I'll be wearing throughout the spring and summer and perhaps into early fall. If you happen to purchase these pants, be sure to turn it inside out while washing to prevent the outer layer of fabric from pilling (kinda learnt that one the hard way).

2) Reversible V-Neck Racerback Cami - $39.90 CAD (Express)

Words cannot express my love for these reversible lightweight camis. Again I bought a couple of these throughout the year during their 40 - 50 % off sales, so in actuality I paid around $20 for each of them. But if you think about it, since each top can technically be two then you're actually getting each top for a mere $10 CAD when on sale. Compared to the $60 ones at Aritzia or the $30 ones I've seen at Topshop, this is a spectacular deal.

I love how versatile these tops are because you can wear them under blazers and skirts to business formal events or just casually under cardigans and jean jackets. One of my favourite looks would have to be styling this with cuffed jeans with my favourite military jacket on top. I will have to feature this in a future OOTD post.

3) Tropical Harem Pants - $23.80 CAD (Forever 21)

I've been really into loose pants lately mostly because they're just so comfy! When I first saw this pair I fell in love with the colours and the pattern and purchased it to reward myself for recent hard work. Patterned harem pants are a must-have for spring and summer and I can't wait to wear them with all of my summer shoes!

4) Long Flare Short - $29.90 CAD (Dynamite)

I'm a really big fan of prints that mix bright and dark colours in an abstract sort of way. I've also been searching for a nice pair of printed shorts that I can just throw on with plain tops and ankle booties. I guess that's what made me try on this pair of shorts when I visited Dynamite the other day. They're super comfortable and good quality but I'm still a little hesitant about paying $30 for a pair of shorts. I hope to use store coupons that they gave me that day next month to buy them for around $24 or possibly less!

5) Ruffled Zip Front Romper - $79.90 CAD (Express)

I've been looking around for a cute romper to wear with neon necklaces and I happened to find this one on the Express website. I love the high-waist fit and the sophistication the ruffles add. This can be a great go-to piece of clothing for brunch with friends or a day out shopping! It also comes in black For now this is going to go on my wish list and I will be watching for the next great sale so that I can hopefully purchase it for half the price or less.

Let me know which ones are your staple items too! :)
